Doctor, will we be able to put on braces tomorrow?

At any age, people can straighten their teeth and correct their bite. These issues are addressed with braces. This is a complex and lengthy process that requires thorough diagnostics and preparation of the oral cavity. During the examination, teeth are cleaned, sanitized, and other procedures are performed. A common question patients have is: what needs to be done before getting braces?

Braces: What They Are and Their Types

Braces are an orthodontic device designed to straighten teeth, close gaps, and correct the bite. They consist of a system including a metal arch, brackets, and attachments. The duration of wearing braces depends on the specific issue and is determined by the orthodontist.

The material of the brackets can be chosen based on financial considerations and appearance. Brackets can be made of:

  • Metal;
  • Ceramic;
  • Sapphire inserts;

There is also a combined type of braces, which features both ceramic and metal elements.

Oral Cavity Diagnostics

The first step at the clinic is an examination. Once the decision to install braces is made, a full diagnostic assessment is conducted. The procedure includes:

  1. An X-ray (orthopantomogram) to determine the position of teeth and roots;
  2. Photographs of the face from different angles;
  3. Creation of dental impressions to make a model for designing braces;
  4. Articulatory studies.

After these procedures, the orthodontist can plan the treatment. They assess the situation, create a correction plan, and inform the patient of the expected duration of wearing braces. In some cases, the need for missing teeth replacement is discussed.

Procedures and Duration of Braces Installation

Before installation, several preparatory procedures are required. First, the oral cavity must be cleaned. A dental hygienist will:

  • Remove plaque;
  • Clean teeth from tartar;
  • Assess the condition of the enamel.

If the enamel is damaged, remineralization may be prescribed. Any cavities must be treated by a dentist. In some cases, a tongue frenulum procedure may be recommended by a surgeon.

The question arises: how long does it take to install braces?

The installation process typically takes between one and one and a half hours. Teeth are first treated with a special solution, then adhesive is applied, and brackets are fixed onto it. Adjustment to braces usually takes from one week to 21 days.
