Advanced caries can lead to root canal disease. When enamel weakens, an empty cavity forms inside the tooth, where food debris can accumulate and decompose, causing infection and inflammation. Delaying canal treatment is not advisable, as inflammation will make itself known. The patient may experience:

  • dull or sharp jaw pain;
  • pronounced pain when consuming cold, acidic, or hot foods;
  • nighttime pain attacks.

When is endodontic treatment needed?

  • Infectious pulpitis – complication of untreated caries when the infection reaches the pulp.
  • Traumatic pulpitis – damage to the pulp chamber from trauma.
  • Periodontitis – inflammation of the root and surrounding tissues, often due to caries complications.
  • Nerve removal – preparatory step before prosthetics to prevent future pulpitis or periodontitis.

Stages of root canal treatment:

  1. Anesthesia via injection into the affected gum area.
  2. Isolation of the tooth with a rubber dam.
  3. Opening of the pulp chamber to access the inflamed pulp.
  4. Removal of damaged tissues.
  5. Mechanical cleaning of the canals with specialized instruments down to the apex.
  6. Chemical treatment to neutralize bacteria and dissolve pulp remnants.
  7. Filling of the canals with gutta-percha to ensure complete sealing.
  8. Tooth reconstruction: depending on the damage, restoration may be done with filling material or, if needed, a crown.

X-rays are taken before and after the procedure to assess progress and confirm quality. At our Tallinn clinic, experienced dentists perform high-quality root canal treatments using binoculars and microscopes. Book an appointment — we will take care of your dental health!
