Treatment of Tooth Spots (ICON System)

White spots on teeth often spoil the aesthetics of a smile, even if the teeth are straight. Previously, such defects were either ignored until a full carious cavity appeared or were filled immediately. Today, ICON technology (Infiltration Concept) allows you to stop the process and restore a healthy look to your teeth in a single visit.

White Spots on Teeth: Main Causes

A white spot is an area of enamel that has lost minerals (calcium, phosphorus) and become porous. The main reasons for its appearance include:

  • Incipient Caries — the “white spot” stage, where enamel erosion is present but a cavity has not yet formed.
  • Post-Braces Effects — if oral hygiene was insufficient, light marks may remain where the brackets were located after the system is removed.
  • Fluorosis — excessive fluoride in the body during the period of tooth formation.
  • Enamel Hypoplasia — a congenital disorder of the tooth structure.

The ICON Method: Treatment Principle

The essence of the method is infiltration. A special fluid polymer composition penetrates deep into the porous structure of the damaged enamel, seals the micropores, and blocks access to bacteria and acids. After polymerization, the material restores the optical properties of the tooth, and the spot visually disappears, blending in with the healthy enamel.

How the Procedure Works

Treating caries with the ICON system on one tooth takes about 15–20 minutes and involves the following steps:

  1. Isolation — the doctor places a rubber dam (latex barrier) to prevent saliva from touching the tooth.
  2. Cleaning — the surface of the spot is treated with a special gel that opens the enamel pores.
  3. Application of Infiltrant — the ICON composition is applied directly to the tooth, penetrating deep into the structure over several minutes.
  4. Polymerization — the composition is cured with a special light, becoming solid.
  5. Polishing — the final step to give the tooth a natural shine.

Treating caries at the spot stage with the ICON system is ideal for front and side teeth and for removing spots after the removal of braces. The method is excellent for treating caries in hard-to-reach areas (such as between teeth) where drilling would affect too much healthy tissue.

Advantages of the Method

  • No Drilling: all healthy tooth tissues are preserved; no drilling is required.
  • Treatment Without Anesthesia: no numbing is needed, making the method ideal for children and patients with dental phobia.
  • Aesthetics in 1 Visit: the result is visible immediately after the procedure.
  • Durability: the progression of caries in that specific area stops for years.

When the Method is Not Suitable

Despite its versatility, ICON has limitations. In cases of deep caries, where the decay has gone beyond the enamel (into the dentin), only a classic filling will help. Pigmented dark brown or old spots may not respond to full correction. A contraindication is also the rare occurrence of individual intolerance—an allergy to the components of the polymer composition. Additionally, this method is not typically used for severe enamel hypoplasia, hyperplasia, erosion, or certain forms of fluorosis.

The ICON system is a technology that allows you to keep the tooth vital and beautiful without resorting to radical measures. The key is to catch the moment before the spot turns into a carious cavity.
