Electric Toothbrush: How to Choose?

Plaque can be removed with a regular toothbrush, but the modern market offers many alternatives to manual models. One of them is the electric toothbrush. There has been ongoing debate about how effective and safe it is for teeth and gums. Most dentists agree that an electric toothbrush helps clean enamel and remove bacteria, even in hard-to-reach areas.

Electric Toothbrushes

Plaque can be removed using any type of electric toothbrush. The main types are:

  • Mechanical Toothbrush — A device with a handle and a rotating head that removes plaque. Models are chosen based on bristle hardness, rotation frequency, and additional features. These brushes are usually inexpensive but quite effective.
  • Sonic Toothbrush — Cleans enamel using sound vibrations. The vibrations create foam that penetrates between teeth. This gentle cleaning is suitable even for people with veneers, crowns, and dentures. It also massages and strengthens the gums. However, it should not be used in cases of serious oral diseases. A downside is that it tends to be noisier.
  • Ultrasonic Toothbrush — The most advanced model, capable of cleaning even under the gums. Bristle movement is powered by ultrasonic waves. Ultrasonic brushes should not be used by people with veneers, crowns, or pacemakers.

Each toothbrush may come with different types of brush heads to suit individual needs: round, multi-directional, single-bristle, rubber, and others.

Conditions Where Electric Toothbrush Use Is Not Recommended

Overall, electric toothbrushes are safe, but there are contraindications:

  • Gum diseases (periodontitis, gingivitis) — use may worsen the condition and cause bleeding;
  • Tooth pain — brushing can increase discomfort, so a dentist should be consulted first;
  • Open wounds in the mouth — brushing may aggravate the wound and cause bleeding;
  • Herpes on the lips or in the mouth — the toothbrush can contribute to spreading the infection.

Using an electric toothbrush does not replace regular preventive dental visits. Professional cleaning helps maintain healthy teeth and gums.
