First Visit to the Dentist: How to Prepare Your Child and What to Expect

A child’s first dental visit is not just a check-up — it’s an important introduction to the dentist, the clinic, and the concept of dental care.
How this visit goes often shapes a child’s future attitude toward dentistry.
At Kadrioru Plaza Hambakliinik, we do everything to make this first experience easy, positive, and fear-free.

When Should You Go to the Dentist for the First Time?

The recommended age is 6–12 months, when the first tooth erupts. At this visit:

  • the dentist checks tooth health and development
  • gives hygiene and care advice
  • helps parents choose a toothbrush and toothpaste
  • familiarizes the child with the dental environment

The earlier the first visit happens, the easier future visits will be.

How to Prepare Your Child for the First Visit?

  1. Explain Who a Dentist Is. Let your child know that the dentist checks their teeth to keep them healthy and pain-free. Avoid words like “hurt,” “injection,” or “uncomfortable.”
  2. Play “Going to the Doctor”. At home, use a mirror — show how to open the mouth, make soft sounds, or use a toy dental set.
  3. Be a Role Model. If your child sees you going to the dentist calmly, they’ll feel more secure.
  4. Avoid Bribes or Promises. Don’t promise gifts before the visit — instead, surprise them afterward so they don’t expect rewards for enduring pain.

What Happens During the First Visit?

At Kadrioru Plaza Hambakliinik, we start with adaptation:

  • introduce the child to the doctor and the clinic
  • explain everything in a playful way
  • check the teeth gently, quickly, and painlessly
  • use cartoons, toys, and a soft tone
  • advise parents and create a prevention plan

The first visit takes no more than 15–20 minutes and happens in a friendly, warm environment.

What is the Parent’s Role During the Visit?

  • Stay calm — kids sense your emotions
  • Don’t criticize your child, even if they are scared
  • Let the dentist guide the process
  • Don’t say things like “they’ll just look and do nothing” — trust the professional

Why is the First Visit So Important?

  1. Prevents future fear of dentists
  2. Helps detect early signs of caries
  3. Encourages a positive attitude toward health
  4. Makes future appointments easier

We aim for every child to leave with a smile — and want to come back.
